Pre #ETDD2024 Blog: Exploring Africa’s Digital Revolution: Seizing Opportunities and Closing the Skills Gap

In today’s world, technology is changing fast, transforming how we live, work, and connect with each other. This digital revolution has brought countless opportunities but also affected every aspect of our lives, whether we’re ready for it or not.

Africa hasn’t been left behind in this revolution, but where does it stand? How well is the continent using technology, and how can it use it to improve life for its people? These are important questions, especially considering the potential digital technologies have for development in Africa.

To fully benefit from these opportunities, Africa needs skilled people who can use technology effectively. Our organization DEMERA are stepping up to provide training for young people, especially women, to help bridge this skills gap and empower them to contribute to Africa’s development.

DEMERA sees Africa as a place full of promise for business and innovation. By focusing on building a more connected and inclusive digital society and economy, we’re working on improving digital infrastructure, promoting digital literacy, and boosting economic growth.

On February 10, 2024, DEMERA launched an IT training program with 84 participants, including 19 women. The program covers a range of topics like Microsoft Azure and 365, cybersecurity, and soft skills. After the basic training, participants can choose further training based on their interests and career goals.

DEMERA is also committed to closing the gender gap in the tech industry. We provide support and mentorship to women, creating a community where they can learn and grow together. This focus on women’s empowerment is crucial for achieving equality in the tech sector.

So how do we empower Africa’s Digital future to bring meaningful impact with DEMERA’s Initiatives? We aim to outline three important actions and their corresponding impacts that DEMERA can achieve while conducting the IT training program to address Africa’s challenges.

1. Addressing the Skills Gap

By offering comprehensive IT training programs, DEMERA aims to equip young people and women with the skills needed in today’s digital world. This would lead to a more skilled workforce in Africa, capable of driving economic development and innovation.

2. Promoting Gender Inclusivity

DEMERA is actively encouraging more women to join the tech industry through scholarships, mentorship programs, and networking opportunities. By empowering women in tech, DEMERA hopes to tap into their potential to drive growth and innovation in Africa.

3. Community Engagement and Collaboration

By partnering with local communities, educational institutions, and businesses, DEMERA is creating a supportive ecosystem for IT training. This grassroots approach ensures that training programs meet local needs, leading to entrepreneurship, job creation, and economic growth in underserved areas of Africa.

We firmly believe that our initiatives are essential for unlocking Africa’s digital potential and ensuring that everyone can benefit from the opportunity’s technology brings.
